In about prog 680, give or take a dozen. I'd LOVE to know how that came about. Was there a real intervew? Did Simon actually meet them? And tell them "actually we might use 2 lines of what you say and the rest will all be filled with weirdness" ?

Remember Cyb-AUD? She was lovely! And I think a metalhead. Audrey Wong a bit of research tells me. Back when 2000AD did a music page once every 500 progs or so (been about 1800 since...). And a computer games page now and then which at least was more relevant than what Alan McKenzie thought about music. Still, would be a better use of pages than yet more Sinister Fucking Dexter, my heart genuinely leapt when I thought the story really ended a couple years ago.

But no. It's back. Silly "ethnic" swearing. Stupid fucking puns. And "Baddies can't shoot" as the culmination of every story. Literally hundreds of bullets, from 4 feet range, and not one hits. FFS. Dan Abnett has been a middle-quality writer since forever (since Marvel in the 80s!). Don't have him write the whole prog.

Public service announcement there. Got de-railed. Still needed saying about Abnett though. Surely his yacht is big enough, he doesn't need a new one.
Greenaumhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07488240564211505386noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7321253799411057654.post-14515442299362058242021-02-13T09:55:55.568-08:002021-02-13T09:55:55.568-08:00I think the original Muzak Killer was music Garth ...I think the original Muzak Killer was music Garth actually LIKED. And it wasn't "rockist", mostly the sort of indie stuff a certain sect of people Garth's age, and roundabout, would like. Don't you remember seeing "Cud" painted on every other city block? Or the "U" with udders in ever panel Dermot Power painted? Carl Puttnam block? There was a big influx of indie-heads round about 1991 or so. Fending off the obviously-metaller Simon Bisley of progs gone by.

By the time of "Live", Garth was in that later stage of puberty, where he's cringingly embarassed by absolutely everything, particularly sincere opinions. So he takes the piss out of his old self. Muzak Killer was meant sincerely, Kylie really WAS terrible, and those three cunts behind her really DID threaten to destroy music forever. And they succeeded, if you follow the charts. All horrendous garbage, a machine to make a profit on a marketing investment. Of course you don't need the charts or TOTP now we have Internets, but still, point stands that popular music is bloody awful now, where in the early 80s there's a lot of stuff that still stands up now. And in decades prior to that. Can you say that about, say, 2000-2010?

Anyway yeah "Live", embarassed, right. By then of course the age of cheap irony was beginning too. So Robert Smith is the hero, not because Garth doesn't like The Cure, he'll surely have loved them if he liked those other bands, he's just being self-deprecating. Same with the Manics. Maybe there's room to take the piss out of Clarence cutting "4 RalE" into his arm. But as much as owt, it was Garth showing disillusionment, as well as trying to pretend he was ALWAYS cool and never liked anything, ever.

And "Boots" was a good song and so was Ace Of Spades, and so were the other ones. He chose unarguably great songs for the first story, difficult to say they aren't great, difficult to put them on at the indi disco and not have the crown all jumping up and down.

Might be Garth was actually a bit behind the kids his age in experiencing all of that at however old he was, about 20 when he wrote the first Muzak Killer? But he is a comic nerd, we're not at the cutting edge of fashion. Nor would we ever want to be.
Greenaumhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07488240564211505386noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7321253799411057654.post-82997105952684881322012-04-02T12:50:10.191-07:002012-04-02T12:50:10.191-07:00This comment has been removed by the author.Jock Savagehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12650909385018296433noreply@blogger.com
